Rep. Scotty Campbell appointed to House Finance, Ways, and Means Committee and Health & Human Resources Committee

(NASHVILLE, January 13, 2011) - State Representative Scotty Campbell (R-Mountain City) has been appointed by Speaker of the House Beth Harwell (R-Nashville) to serve as a member of the House Finance, Ways, and Means Committee and the Health and Human Resources Committee.

Much of the activity of the Finance committee centers around preparation of the general appropriations bill commonly referred to as the state budget.

"With budget negotiations coming up, I am grateful to have a seat at the table allowing me to argue for a healthy level of state appropriations to our region," said Rep. Scotty Campbell.

"I will continue to work with our State Senator and Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey, Speaker Beth Harwell, and Governor Bill Haslam to see that we have a balanced budget without new taxes," Campbell continued. "The people sent us here to be fiscally responsible, and I will look to limit the size of government as well as reduce regulations on our businesses and citizens."

Any measure which has an impact of $100,000 or more, under the rules of the House, is referred to this Finance committee. The committee holds budget hearings on the general appropriations bill.

"As a 911 dispatcher and volunteer firefighter I am anxious to begin work on this committee," said Campbell of his appointment to the House Health and Human Resources Committee. "I thank House Speaker Harwell for recognizing that my time as an emergency medical technician in an ambulance, as a firefighter, and at the receiving end of numerous 911 calls will be a valuable resource to this committee."

Campbell, who lives in Mountain City, previously volunteered as a crewmember with the Johnson County Rescue Squad and Emergency Medical Service. He is a dispatcher at Johnson County 911 and is a volunteer firefighter. He is serving his first term in the Tennessee House of Representatives.

Most legislation referred to the Health & Human Resources Committee is relevant to three major topical areas: mental health, public health, and human services. Bills relating to health care, HIV/AIDS, aid for Children, mental health, pharmaceuticals, and nursing have been referred to this committee in recent years. They have also dealt with hospitals, regulations, and funding institutions related to health and welfare.

Campbell represents all of Johnson and part of Sullivan Counties, which include Mountain City, Blountville, Bluff City, Piney Flats, and part of Bristol.
